Doug’s Leadership Book Review:

This last month was crazy busy with all the new hires, events and excitement at Portland Internetworks.  As a result, no books were read in July.  But, below, I’ve included a few future books on my summer reading list.  If you’ve read or can recommend any of them, I’d love to hear from you.

The Hard Thing About Hard Things:  Building a Business When There Are No Easy Answers – Ben Horowitz

Multipliers:  How the Best Leaders Make Everyone Smarter – Liz Wiseman

Rocket Fuel:  The One Essential Combination That Will Get You More of What You Want from Your Business – Gino Wickman

Zero to One:  Notes on Startups, or How to Build the Future – Peter Thiel

The Lean Startup:  How Today’s Entrepreneurs Use Continuous Innovation to Create Radically Successful Businesses – Eric Ries

But, despite no reading in July, I had a great opportunity to be a guest speaker in a class on Contemporary Leadership Issues at Portland State University last week.  Professor Stan Heister invited me to share stories about Portland Internetworks’ leadership lessons learned and how we’ve transformed our company by focusing on collaborative efforts rather than hierarchical management.  I was also able to share some tips to aspiring business school seniors getting ready to head into the “real” world after graduation.  I thoroughly enjoyed the experience and look forward to any future opportunity to meet with promising young business leaders!
