We’re pretty proud of our Northwest roots. When the whole world changed, we were proud to be a part of a community that stood behind its businesses and organizations when they needed it most. We’re pretty optimistic people in general, and we’re feeling good that things are looking up. But, it’s still crucial that we continue to rally behind Portland today. So, we’re sharing a few easy ways that you can show your support for this community right now.
Safely volunteer your time.
Last spring, many local nonprofits who traditionally rely heavily on volunteers to carry out their programs had to scale back their volunteer opportunities in order to ensure safe conditions for both volunteers and those they serve. So, they strategized about how to keep everyone safe, meanwhile still carrying out their missions and serving the communities that need it most. They added virtual volunteer opportunities. They took fundraising events online. They provided PPE, and in smaller groups, adapt they did. Now, there are so many ways to get our and volunteer your time to the organizations here in Portland that put this community on their backs, not just during crazy COVID times, but all the time. So, whatever causes that you support, see how you can help. And, if you don’t know where to start, check out Hands On Greater Portland to find opportunities near you.
Shop local.
You’ve heard this one before. But, there’s a good reason! Voting with your dollar is one of the most impactful ways that you can show your support for Portland businesses. One of the many great things about this quirky and vibrant city is that most things that you could be shopping for, you can get locally. Local organizations like the Portland Business Alliance, Prosper Portland, and Travel Oregon have made it easy search and figure out exactly how to support your favorite businesses, and even find new favorites by category with initiatives like ShopSmallPDX and Here for Portland.
Show your favorite organizations some love.
Whether it’s your favorite coffee shop down the road, your barber, or a nonprofit whose mission really hits home for you, you can show your support in ways that won’t cost you a dime. Recommend them to a friend, even through social media. Leave a review on Google, Yelp, or their website. If they ask for your feedback, let them know you love them! You can even write a #PDXloveletter to your favorite places, if you want to! Be it an all-out letter or just a five-star rating, even the smallest gestures add up.
There are so many things to love about Portland. Sure, we’re a little quirky here. But we’re also resilient, tenacious, and not afraid to get our hands a little dirty. Let’s use that compassion and courage to continue to lift up the small but mighty businesses and organizations who make this place so special.
